The Cultivation is an art and design project using agriculture and, in particular, the cultivation of buckwheat as a practice and momentum. Intercultural experience and a personal desire to connect across generations has drawn up several experiments, field trials, and interventions. A prototype of handmade buckwheat noodles is currently being developed based on Japanese craft tradition. The buckwheat has been cultivated in southern Sweden by Hushållningssällskapet. All of these steps, in the very slow process of growing, are documented in various representations. In the practical “doing”, the transfer of knowledge and translation can be shown to display a pattern of communication.

Gunnel Pettersson is an artist and senior lecturer at the School of Arts and Communication, Malmö University.
